Osmosis

Osmosis is the movement of water in or out of a cell. If the cell is in a isotonic solution, there is an equal amount of solution and water on the inside of the cell and in the environment outside the cell. If the cell is in a hypotonic solution, the environment outside the cell has less water than inside the cell itself. The water wants to be equal inside and outside the cell, so water will go out of the cell, causing it to shrivel up. If the cell is in a hypertonic solution, then the environment outside the cell has more water than inside the cell itself. This causes water to rush into the cell, since the water wants to be equal. The cell will then swell because it has so much water in it.
